My Mac App Arsenal

Published on June 25th, 2009 in Comments

Dan just got a new one of those new shinny Apple Mac Book Pro 13.  It was really fun to just geek out and tell him my favorite programs that I use.  Then he had a brilliant idea that I should share my list with you.  So here it is, my Mac arsenal

System

SMCFanControl2 – A must have .  Control my fan rpms to keep my laptop cool.

The Unarchiver – better archive utility than the default Mac app

Terminal – that’s a given.  Make it easy on the eyes w/ a theme.

VMWare – I have to use it, it’s the only thing that works with my handheld Windows only GPS

QuickSilver – AWESOME because how intuitive it is.  You should really watch a screencast on youtube how to use it.  It becomes second nature.  I get lost w/o it.

Growl – Love the Bezel theme

Awaken: Get my ass out of bed when I’m on the road and have a meeting the next morning.

MenuMeters: gotta know how much ram I have, how much cpu I’m using, what network traffic there is…quickly.

Web

WebKit – the *best* web browser.  Safari’s OSS rendering engine and JS engine.  Safari 4 is awesome.

FireFox – because of Firebug, when I’m having problems with Inspector

Fluid – it makes site specific applications.. If you use google reader for RSS, it turns it into a desktop app w/ an unread count badge. A must have for me.  Get a cool icons from Flickr

Network

DynDns Updater – Updates my dynamic IP address.

Wireshark: formally ethereal, packet sniffer

KisMac: robust wireless network discovery tool

CyberDuck – FTP

Fugu – SCP, SSH

MacFusion – Mount SSH dirs as Mac Volumes

JollyFastVNC – VNC, very nice for free

CoRD: Remote Desktop

Transmission – Bittorrents

Messaging

Tweetie – twitter (backup Nambu)

Colloquy – IRC

Adium – Instant Messaging

Mail.app (checkout WideMail plugin)

Ventrilo – gotta cowork.

Skype

Development

TextMate – editor with packages (Get the GetBundle Bundle, then get git, svn, python, php, etc…)

XCode PHP 5.2.6

phpsh

Python 2.6.2 (twisted, pylint, sphinx)

Erlang R13B01

Apache – the default apple install, but modified with userdirs turned on.

RabbitMQ – Message Queue

Version Control

Versions – SVN client… nice for browsing.

git – my first vcs love

Mercurial – my second vcs love

BazaarSubversion – I use these too.

GitX – I don’t use this as much anymore, but it’s great

Database

MySQL Server (i just use the shell for the client)

CouchDBX – Document Database  Engine in Erlang using JSON & REST

Debug

MacGDBp – You probably don’t need this, but it works w/ xdebug in PHP so you can debug code. You’re past that phase of your Sugar career :)

macCallGrind- Does profilling from the output of xdebug SOAP Client – just a handy tool to directly interface w/ a soap api.

Productivity

OmniGraffle – it makes those pretty UML diagrams when you’re trying to explain it to someone

Automator: best way to quickly get my wife’s daily crossword printed.

iWork: Beats Office six ways to Sunday

Address Book: this rocks w/ MobileMe.  Syncing sucks.

iCal

Entertainment

Last.fm – yeah, i’m on Last.fm

Boxee – Awesome way to turn my mac into an awesome media center

iTunes – ’nuff said

HandBreak – Video compression tool

VLC – AV tool that rocks

Seashore – Open Source Graphic Editor
